What to Expect at Your First Spin Class
Trying something new, especially when it comes to fitness, can be both exciting and a bit nerve-racking. Spin classes have become incredibly popular because they offer an engaging and supportive way to boost your energy, improve cardiovascular health, and feel amazing afterward. But if you're new, you might wonder exactly what to expect.
Finding an inclusive, welcoming environment should be your top priority when it comes to selecting a spin class. At your first spin class, you can expect to feel a little nervous and fresh, but with a little help from your motivators and by understanding what takes place, you’ll feel more equipped to enjoy the ride.
Arriving at the Studio
Your first class should be stress-free, so plan to arrive about 15 minutes early, as the door closes right on the scheduled class time. This extra time lets you get comfortable with the studio, meet your instructor (who we call our motivators), and set up your bike to fit your body. If you're unsure how to adjust your bike, our friendly team is ready to help you get it just right.
Setting Up Your Bike
Getting your bike set up correctly makes a huge difference in comfort and safety. Adjust the seat height so your leg is slightly bent when the pedal is at its lowest point. Adjust the handlebars to a comfortable height, typically around the same height as the seat or slightly higher. Feel free to ask our motivators for assistance – everyone was a beginner once!
What to Wear to a Spin Class
Choosing the right clothes helps you feel comfortable throughout your class. Spin is an energetic workout that will make you sweat, so moisture-wicking, breathable athletic clothing is ideal.
Shoes for Spinning
Spin bikes use special shoes that clip into the pedals. These shoes improve your efficiency and stability during class. YYC CYCLE offers shoes with your class, so there's no need to worry if you don't own a pair yet. Just be sure to wear comfortable socks to class.
Accessories You'll Need
Hydration is key, so bring a water bottle. We also provide towels to wipe off your sweat during class. Both will help you stay comfortable and energized from start to finish. The best accessory of all, though, is the chilled lemongrass towel that will be waiting for you after your class!
The Spin Class Experience
Your motivator will guide you through a high-energy, rhythm-based, workout designed to engage both your mind and body. Classes last between 50 minutes (45 minutes working time and 5 minute stretch) and include a variety of intervals, climbs, races, and recovery periods. Each session is choreographed to motivating music that makes it easier to push through challenging moments and fully enjoy your workout.
Going at Your Own Pace
Remember, this class is your experience. You control the intensity of your workout by adjusting your bike's resistance and cadence. Your motivator will provide guidance, but you always have the freedom to modify the workout to suit your personal fitness level and goals. There are no screens, computers or leader-boards so that you can focus on your journey instead of comparing yourself to the room.
What if I Need a Break?
Taking breaks is completely normal—especially during your first few classes. If you need to slow down, sit down, or ease off the resistance at any time, listen to your body. The spin community is supportive and inclusive, and your comfort and safety always come first.
Is It Normal to Have Pain in the Sit Bones?
New riders commonly experience slight discomfort or soreness in their sit bones after their first few spin classes. This discomfort is temporary and usually decreases significantly after a few rides as your body adjusts to the bike seat. If you haven’t ridden a bike in a while, this is absolutely normal if you’re jumping back on a bike for the first time in a long time!
How to Minimize Discomfort
Adjusting the seat to the correct height and position will make a big difference. If you continue to experience discomfort, speak to your motivator, they can suggest adjustments to help you feel more comfortable.
Does the Pain Go Away?
Yes, it does! As your muscles become familiar with the cycling posture, this soreness typically disappears completely after a few sessions. Consistency is key, so keep attending classes regularly to adapt more quickly.
