Beginner Spin Class Tips: 8 Things No One Tells You Before You Start

You've been thinking about trying a spin class in Calgary, but something keeps holding you back. Maybe you're not sure what to expect, or you're worried you'll show up and feel totally lost. That feeling is more common than you think, and it makes complete sense.

The truth is, spin class is one of the most beginner-friendly workouts out there, and once you know what to expect, showing up feels a whole lot easier. Here's everything your friend who's been going for years would actually tell you before your first ride, straight from the new rider's guide to help you feel ready from day one.

1. It is a Whole-Body Experience (and So Much Fun)

The moment you step into the studio, you'll notice the lights are dim, and the music is already setting the mood. It feels more like a fun event than a workout, which honestly makes it way easier to get in the zone. The energy in the room is welcoming, not intimidating.

Look around, and you'll see people at all different fitness levels, from first-timers to regulars who've been riding for years. Nobody is paying attention to what you're doing on your bike, because everyone is focused on their own ride. You're there for yourself, and that's exactly how it should be.

The classes are 50 minutes long, which includes 45 minutes of working time and a blissful 5-minute stretch at the end. You’ll ride through a curated journey of interval tracks, climbs, races, weight tracks, and hover tracks. Because every single class is rhythm-based, the playlist is always changing, meaning you'll never get bored. The studio setup makes it easy to follow along, even if it's your very first time.

2. We Leave the Tech (and Judgment) at the Door

A lot of people worry they won’t be able to keep up with numbers on a screen. Here is a little secret: YYC CYCLE is a completely tech-free and phone-free space. There are no computers and no wattage trackers on the bikes. This distraction-free zone lets you unplug from the outside world and focus entirely on your own mental health and wellness goals. Nobody is tracking your stats, and nobody is judging you. You can completely lose yourself in the heavy beats of the music and just ride.

3. Your Motivator is Your Biggest Fan

At YYC CYCLE, instructors are called Motivators, and they are hyper-focused on energy, community, and mental well-being. They aren't there to yell at you; they are there to inspire you! YYC CYCLE doesn’t subscribe to a specific body type or fitness level for their Motivators or their clients. Diversity is a must here. Your Motivator is like that friend you deeply admire. You know, the one who makes you want to be your best self while completely welcoming you just as you are.

4. You Don't Need to Bring Your Own Shoes

Don't worry about buying expensive gear before your first class. At YYC CYCLE, cycling shoes are included with your booking! When you arrive, you’ll get clip-in shoes that attach directly to the pedals, which helps you engage your legs fully through each pedal stroke.

Pro-tip: Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class starts. This gives you plenty of time to check in, grab your shoes, put your things in a locker, and ask a Motivator to help you get your bike set up perfectly.

5. Getting the Perfect Bike Setup

Getting your bike set up correctly makes a massive difference in how comfortable your ride feels. When you’re standing beside your bike, the seat should line up with your hip bone. That way, when you pedal, you’ll have a slight bend in your knee at the bottom of each stroke to protect your joints. Your handlebars should be adjusted so your back stays straight and relaxed, not hunched forward. If you aren't sure, just ask your Motivator. We love helping new friends find the perfect fit!

6. "We Don’t Do Summer 6-Packs"

If you are looking for a fitness studio obsessed with toxic diet culture, this isn't it. At YYC CYCLE, mental health and whole-body wellness are paramount. We lean hard into body positivity and inclusivity. You are here to move your body because it feels good, boosts your mood, and clears your mind. Come exactly as you are, because every single body belongs in this room.

7. You Control Your Own Resistance

One of the biggest beginner mistakes is going all-out in the first 10 minutes and burning out. Remember, you control your own resistance dial the entire time. Lowering the resistance when you need to is completely fine, and there’s zero shame in it! Adjusting your dial is a smart move to protect your form. If you need to sit down and take a breather during a tough climb or heavy interval, do it. Your ride is your own, and you know your body best.

8. Luxury Amenities are Waiting for You

You’re going to sweat a lot! Make sure to bring a big water bottle to stay hydrated. But don’t worry about packing your whole bathroom in your gym bag. Our team provides complimentary towels to wipe off your sweat during class. Even better? A chilled lemongrass towel will be waiting for you after your ride to help you cool down and refresh.
